The unique composition of Monel 400 consists of 63% nickel and 28-34% copper, which is also accompanied by stringent manufacturing standards. The alloy has a very low content of iron (≤2.5%) and manganese (≤2%), thus improving its resistance in corrosive environments like seawater, acids, and alkalis. It is only at very high temperatures that conventional steels or other alloys lose their strength; Monel 400 retains its structural integrity from -200°C up to +480°C.
The tensile strength of the alloy depends on the processing and varies; cold-worked rods have a tensile strength of 110,000 psi maximum (760 MPa), and hot-worked bars retain 80,000 psi (552 MPa). This elongation capacity is not more than 35%. Thus, it can remain under stress without fracturing but will not yield. The Rockwell hardness of Monel 400 falls between B60 and B95. Besides that, it holds great dimensional precision; for these reasons, it is suitable for machining intricate parts such as valves, shafts, and fasteners.
